Atheism Proves The Existence Of God

The atheist asserts that God does not exist.  When he makes this statement he is making a truth claim.  But in order for truth to exist, God must exist.  If God does not exist there is no such thing as truth.  Therefore when the atheist says God does not exist, he actually proves the existence of God.

God is the truth, he is the ultimate authority.  If God did not exist there would be no basis for the categories of truth or falsehood.  When an atheist makes a truth claim he is not living consistently within his own belief system.

A consistent atheist would actually have no basis for anything.  He would be left with absurdity and nonsense.  Without God there would be no ultimate meaning or purpose for anything.  The only consistent response for an atheist to anything that happened would be, so what?

The atheist cannot live consistently within his own worldview.  He must borrow from the Christian worldview in order to live his life. Atheists must assume the existence of God in order to deny the existence of God.  So atheism actually proves the existence of God.  An atheist cannot escape the fact that he is made in the image of God and must live in God's world.

Psalm 14:1 And Unbelievers

(Psalm 14:1)"The fool says in his heart, There is no God.  They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is none who does good."  (ESV)

The term fool in this verse denotes moral foolishness, not a lack of intellectual ability.  The unbeliever says in his heart that God does not exist or that God exists but he is not relevant.  He believes he will not be held accountable by God or face his judgment.  From this kind of thinking flows corruption, abominable deeds, and not doing good.

The unbeliever is suppressing the truth about God.  He is worshiping the creature rather than the creator.  He is pretending to be his own god.  The unbeliever tries to operate independently of God and his Word.  He seeks to be a law unto himself.  This is sometimes referred to as the autonomous self.

When the unbeliever rejects God and his Word as the foundation of his thought and his life he becomes corrupt, foolish, and absurd.  Claiming to be wise he has become a fool.  The unbeliever needs to turn from his foolishness and sinfulness and turn to Christ in whom are true wisdom and knowledge.

When Atheists Call Christians Hypocrites

The charge of hypocrisy is sometimes leveled
against Christians by atheists.  Christians are accused of not living what they say they believe.  We must point out that not all professing Christians are true Christians.  Also, most Christians have never claimed to be without sin.  But it is true that even true Christians do not keep the law of God.  This is also kind of the point of Christianity because no one is capable of keeping the law of God (See Romans 3:23).  We are all sinners in need of a Savior.  Salvation is found in Christ alone.

But we actually have a bigger problem than Christian hypocrisy.  The atheist believes hypocrisy is wrong but he has no basis for even believing hypocrisy is wrong.  In atheism God is not there so there is no ultimate authority or absolute standard by which to make a judgment.  There is no ultimate authority to define right and wrong or good and evil.  The atheist simply has no foundation on which to build a system of morality.

When the atheist refers to hypocrisy as wrong he is not living out his atheism consistently.  Atheism cannot be lived out consistently, it is impossible to do because it does not fit reality.  In order for the atheist to accuse the Christian of hypocrisy he must step out of his atheistic worldview and borrow from the Christian worldview.

So when the atheist charges the Christian with hypocrisy he ends up refuting his own atheism.  The atheistic worldview is inconsistent, contradictory, and unlivable.  It is self refuting and therefore proven to be a false worldview.

On the other hand the Christian worldview has a basis for calling hypocrisy wrong.  It is the law of God.  (Exodus 20:16) "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor" (ESV).  The Christian worldview is consistent, coherent, non-contradictory, and livable.  The Christian worldview is proven to be the true worldview.

The Atheist Has A God

Doesn't atheism reject the existence of God?  So how can you say atheists have a god?  They have simply declared themselves to be god.  The atheist rejects the God of the Bible because he wants to be a god himself.

The atheist wants to be the ultimate authority over himself.  He does not want to be told what to do or how to live.  But people trying to be their own god creates problems.  There ends up being no ultimate authority.  After all why does one person's opinion matter more than that of someone else?  You end up with moral relativism, there is no ultimate right or wrong.

Atheism has no basis for truth, reality, ethics, purpose, or meaning.  The atheist cannot live his life consistently according to his worldview.  He must contradict himself, he has to borrow from Christianity in order to live his life.

We were created by God for God.  When a person rejects the one true God he will always try to find a substitute.  The atheist simply tries to substitute himself.  Atheists do not hate God because he does not exist, they hate God because he does exist.  They suppress the truth by unrighteousness.  God's existence is obvious to all, they are without excuse.  Atheists have exchanged the truth about God for a lie (See Romans 1:18-25).

All people should face the reality that the God of the Bible exists.  The creation itself and the design of our world point to his existence.  Biblical Christianity provides the only basis for truth, reality, ethics, purpose, and meaning.

No God, No Evil

Atheists often bring up the problem of evil for Christians.  They ask how can God be good and omnipotent (all powerful) and still allow evil?  Have atheists struck a fatal blow against Christianity?  Or do atheists have their own problem of evil?

The atheist actually finds himself in a quandary.  He says there is no God and then proceeds to talk about evil.  But if there is evil, there must also be good.  If there is good and evil then we have a moral framework.  For a moral framework to exist there must be an absolute authority who is outside of us and greater than us.

An atheist has no basis on which to categorize or define evil.  Without God as a transcendent authority there is no good or evil.  It has been said that if God does not exist then all things are permissible.

Atheism has no basis for morality and cannot consistently speak of good and evil.  Atheists cannot even call murder or child abuse wrong and be consistent.  Atheists must borrow from the Christian worldview in order to have the concepts of good and evil.  Atheism simply cannot be consistently lived.  Good is what is in line with God's law and character.  Evil is whatever violates his law and character.

The atheist defeats his own argument and refutes himself.  If there is no God then there can be no evil.  In order to speak of evil, God must exist.  The existence of evil does not disprove the existence of God.  To the contrary, the existence of evil is proof for the existence of God.

Atheism And Morality

Atheism has become popular and cool in our modern society.  But does it have any basis for morality?  In atheism there is no outside standard or greater authority than ourselves.  Everything becomes simply a matter of opinion and moral relativism takes hold in society.  We here, who are you to judge whenever anyone says something is right or wrong.  No one can make a truth claim because there is ultimately no truth.  In atheism each individual tries to become his own god (it is kind of ironic).

But most atheist do live with some kind of moral standards.  When the atheist lives with a set of moral standards he is being inconsistent.  An atheist also has no basis for love or human dignity.  If humans are not created in the image of God then there is no basis for humans to be valued or loved.  In order to have moral standards the atheist must borrow from a Biblical worldview and live inconsistently.

The atheist also has the problem of evil.  He cannot explain evil and he has no basis to categorize good and evil.  Atheism cannot consistently say that anything is wrong.  To be consistent it would have to remain neutral on things such as murder.  The atheist has no consistent way to stand against anything.  Once again the atheist must borrow from a Biblical worldview.

So why do some people choose atheism?  It is because they do not want to submit to God.  They do not like his authority and morality imposed on them.  They want to be their own god and do whatever they want.

Are there any true atheists?  I think all people actually have a sense of the divine down deep inside.  They suppress the truth because of unrighteousness.  It is actually because of God's moral standards that they embrace atheism.   There is undeniable evidence for the existence of God in  creation itself.  People are without excuse in denying God because it should be plain to everyone.

Is it reasonable to believe that creation just happened?  Could something just come from nothing?  Could complex humans just appear and evolve with no Creator or intelligent design?  No, it is only reasonable to believe that God exists and that he created us.
